Bio

silo portem are a multi-media duo, creating experimental music, films, photography and mixed media artworks, and feature Gillian Young on CD decks, samples and effects, and her husband Simon Young on computer based loops, effects and mixing.

We create improvised multi-layered experimental music and soundscapes that defy categorisation; it could be described as “dark ambient”, but while it’s usually down tempo and often beat free, it is frequently neither dark nor ambient, though chances are, you won’t have heard anything quite like it!

People describe our music as extremely visual and filmic, conjuring up imagery of submerged, unexplored, alien worlds. We aim to reflect those worlds in our experimental films that we create to project at our performances. Our latest film nuit is our homage to Jean Cocteau, and features the experimental macro-photography of Todd Billeci. It is also the title to our latest album, available at Bandcamp

Since relocating to Edinburgh in 2014, we have collaborated with a variety of visual artists, including animators, film makers and choreographers who have used our music to enhance their work.

We are currently working with the award-winning Edinburgh-based film maker Kevin Pickering, providing much of the music on his latest film, Due.

We are always open to new collaborations, and would love to hear from other musicians, film-makers and other creatives who can see the creative potential of our music.
