As experimental musicians whose music arises entirely out of improvisation, we have struggled with live performance. Besides the fact that opportunities for abstract experimental music are extremely limited, we are only too aware how live improvisation can easily equate to self-indulgence or worse, descend into embarrassing chaos. And watching two people bent studiously over equipment is not necessarily an entertaining spectacle, no matter what sounds are being coaxed from the haphazard array of cables, laptops and other barely functioning gear, held together with gaffer-tape on a table that’s almost as big as the tiny stage in front of the equally diminutive and probably disinterested crowd (not that we’re bitter or anything!!).
So in an effort to provide some visual distraction from inadequacies of our live performance, we have for many years been creating our own experimental films to project at our gigs. These have been put together using our own footage and photography — sometimes taken surreptitiously at contemporary art exhibitions — combined with footage “found” on YouTube etc..
We try to make films that are the visual equivalent of our music, creating unusual and unexpected juxtapositions of disparate elements to create something totally new. Like the music, our films are dream-like, narrative-free and don’t profess to be about anything beyond reflecting whatever the mood of the music dictates.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All the films presented here are non-commercial, for demonstration purposes only. To a greater or lesser extent, they also feature material that has not been cleared for copyright. We are actively trying to secure clearance of any sensitive material, but please understand that any clips of other’s work have been chosen with the utmost respect for the artists and film-makers involved, and as such is a celebration of their work, not plagiarism!
